Charleston

 Charleston, SC

Charleston had been on “the” list the past few years and it lived up to all expectations. The southern charm, historically dreamy streets, and range of mouth-watering dishes have us all wanting to return. The city is extremely walkable, but there are some UNREAL spots a short drive outside of the city that shouldn’t be missed; think beaches with the trendy pampas grass & quiet wine tasting spots surrounded by romantic, wispy trees. This is the perfect trip for all, whether it’s a girls weekend like we did, a family trip, or a romantic getaway… there is something for everyone in this charming city.

WHERE TO STAY

  • Airbnb (Magnolia Suite): We stayed all 4 nights at a gorgeous Airbnb that had amazing amenities (washer/dryer for post beach day), kitchen supplies for coffee in the AM, and the option for heating up leftovers in the oven at night! The location was perfect, situated right off of King Street half a mile away from the hustle and bustle. We only had 3 girls staying there but could have honestly fit 3 more in this 2 bedroom 2 bathroom suite.

WHERE TO EAT/DRINK

  • The Daily: We were so in love with this place we went for a 2nd time. This was easily walkable from our Airbnb, but was in an area under construction so could be quite noisy if you decide to eat on their patio. For all the Ohio readers, think NorthStar cuisine with an even more casual twist. Highly recommend any of their seasonal coffees and don’t miss out on the BEPC (bacon egg pimento cheese) on everything bun.

  • Basic Kitchen: This was our first stop once we landed and it did not disappoint. The inside space is eclectic and trendy, with large woven overhang lights, but try to get a spot on the patio- it feels like an oasis. Come here for a healthy brunch with unique cocktails to kick off your vacation. We recommend the cauli wings + watermelon stand or beet margarita!

  • Hall’s Chophouse: Went here for Sunday brunch just so we could experience the gospel choir singing in the front room. This is a more elegant spot, so dress up and come celebrate for something fun (like a birthday). Just be prepared to enjoy free “windex” shots that are made from their in-house vodka. We highly recommend mimosas, eggs benedict and THE FRENCH TOAST!

  • Obstinate Daughter: Our favorite food spot during our Charleston trip. This space is inspired by life at the beach with adorable rope detailing. We loved our corner bar spot after enjoying our day in the sun. We ordered a bottle of delicious red wine and chose a few amazing food recommendations from the bartender off the menu. We devoured and highly suggest the Farro Piccolo, any of the pasta dishes, and the Old Danger Pizza to split between 3 people.

  • Little Jacks Tavern: We stopped at this adorable Italian restaurant in an up and coming area for an early dinner after coming back from our wine tasting. This is a great spot to enjoy a romantic dinner and then hop on over to the sister restaurant for after dinner drinks (Leon’s Oysters). Don’t look at anything else on the menu except the cheeseburger and warm garlic knots- it was fantastic!

  • Raw 167: Be prepared to have a wait, as this place does not take reservations (but we have an amazing wine/cheese shop to enjoy apps close by). Known for their fresh seafood, we came here for a late dinner and enjoyed cocktails, oven roasted oysters, and lobster roll.

  • Prohibition: Loved this bar and wished we could have gone back- their specialty cocktails are delicious! We came here before having dinner at The Ordinary and enjoyed sipping on the Bourbon Thyme, Pimms Cup, and S’express!

  • Xiao Bao Biscuit: Stopped in here for a midday snack, as this is a casual spot, on our way back to our Airbnb! We enjoyed sitting outside with all of the exotic plants + devoured XXB Fried Rice, Jiao Zi (dumpling), and Thai and Nicaragua Beer.

  • Uncork Charleston: After brunch our first day in the city, we enjoyed a glass of wine here on our walk back. Wine in the afternoon is always the answer, and this spot has plenty of fantastic red and white options at a range of prices.

  • Warehouse: We had some sunny days, and some not so sunny days during our long weekend. On one of the days it rained, we ended up running into this bar to escape the weather. This space is extremely unique and was super quiet when we went (though feel like it would be a fun spot on a weekend). We took the corner window booth, sipped on punch jars, and people watched.

  • Sugar Bakeshop: Our last stop in Charleston to pick up an assortment of cupcakes to stuff our face with before our flight. Highly recommend the vanilla blueberry and red velvet flavors.

  • Bin 152: THIS SPOT IS A MUST! We stumbled upon this after realizing we had a 2 hour wait for raw 167, and not only was the service fantastic, but the cheese was mind-blowing. We were very over-whelmed with the cheese assortment so asked our waiter what to get and it didn’t disappoint- Piave Vecchio was our fav and a must to split a bottle of wine while enjoying the apps.

  • Babas on Cannon: Wanted to be tourists for the morning and stopped here before heading to rainbow row from our Airbnb. We picked the wrong coffee drink- do not recommend peanut mocha (a very thick substance like a milkshake!)

  • Miller’s All Day: Near some really cute shops, we came in and had a pitcher of mimosas and if you’re looking for a small bite to eat, we highly recommend the biscuits (fried chicken or pimento)!

WHAT TO DO

  • Sullivan’s Island: Our favorite day during the trip, just because the beach is our happy place. This was such a clean beach and very family friendly- we enjoyed a few hours of sunshine before walking across the street for an early dinner at Obstinate Daughter. It is a VERY easy Uber ride from the city so a must-do to enjoy the ocean.

  • Deep Water Vineyard: We also loved this day trip to this vineyard- we got super lucky and Ubered there and back, but beware it’s EXTREMELY hard to get an Uber back to the city, as this is a 45 min drive. We did a tasting and then ordered a bottle of our favorite wine and walked around the grounds, enjoying the animals and quiet the country has to offer.

  • Go on a Ghost Tour: we unfortunately did not have time to do this, but it’s top on the list for the next time. There is so much history in Charleston and if you find the right tour that mixes spooky with historical you will be sure to leave with fun facts to tell friends and family!
